Ingredients

If you have any ingredients leftover from this strawberry milkshake recipe, check out our Leftover Ingredients Recipe Finder.

  • Strawberries: Fresh or frozen strawberries can be used, depending on your preference and availability. If you’ve got extra strawberries, consider adding them to Sheet Pan Pancakes, make a small batch of Strawberry Scones, or use a few to top an Avocado Salad with Berries.
  • Milk: Regular milk or dairy-free alternatives like almond, soy, or oat milk can be used.
  • Heavy cream: I use heavy cream in this recipe because the cream works as a great thickener. You can certainly leave out the cream if you don’t have any on hand or if you want to shave off a few calories. But really, a milkshake is an indulgence. It shouldn’t be healthy, it’s not a smoothie. In the end, if you want to use only milk, you absolutely can. Just use 1 cup of milk total.
  • Vanilla ice cream: Use your favorite brand of vanilla ice cream or make your own. You can also use a dairy-free alternative. Consider using leftover ice cream in a Shamrock Shake or a Guinness Float!
  • Vanilla extract: (Optional) Just a touch for flavor.

This is just an overview of the ingredients I used andwhy I used them. For the full recipe please scroll down to the recipe box at the bottom of the post.

Recipe Variations

  • Strawberry Banana Milkshake: Craving a creamy twist on this classic milkshake? Throw in a banana for added sweetness and a delightful textural contrast. Bonus: the banana also acts as a natural thickener!
  • Sweet Strawberry Boost:Want to crank up the strawberry flavor? Blend in a tablespoon or two of your favorite strawberry jam for an extra burst of sweetness.
  • Strawberry Ice Cream Switch-Up:Swap out the vanilla ice cream for strawberry ice cream! This creates a more intensely strawberry milkshake, perfect for true strawberry enthusiasts.

Expert Tips

  1. Chill your glass by placing it in the freezer, ensuring it’s refreshingly cold for your milkshake.
  2. Choose high-quality ice cream, as it significantly enhances the flavor of your milkshake.
  3. Before making the milkshake, let the ice cream soften slightly, but avoid letting it melt.
  4. For a luxuriously thick and creamy milkshake, use full-fat ice cream. Low-fat ice cream can also be used for a still delicious but less rich version.
  5. To achieve an ultra-thick milkshake, increase the amount of heavy cream and ice cream in the recipe.
  6. For a more fluid milkshake, simply add more milk to the mixture.
  7. When using frozen strawberries, you might need to tweak the amount of milk to achieve your preferred consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen strawberries to make a strawberry milkshake?

Yes, you can use fresh or frozen strawberries. Using frozen berries will give you a thicker, frostier strawberry shake but it may cause your blender to work a little harder to blend the strawberries. If your blender is struggling, let the strawberries thaw just a little bit so that they blend easier.

Can I double this strawberry milkshake recipe?

This milkshake recipe can easily be doubled to make two milkshakes or tripled to make three. Blend as directed in the recipe.

Do I need a blender to make a strawberry milkshake?

A blender makes the job easy but you can also use a stick blender (immersion blender). In a real bind, use a big stainless steel bowl and a whisk.

    1. Hi Laurel, you can shave off a few calories by eliminating the heavy cream and using a lower fat milk. The milkshake won’t be as thick and rich but will still be absolutely delicious.
